Almost Happy birthday for me

I guess my last blog update was when we were at El Morro several weeks ago. Since then we've been to Cottonwood Canyon State Park for one night on our way from El Morro up to visit some people on Mount Blanca with a stop in Albuquerque for dog food and a stop in Santa Fe for people food.
We only stayed on Mt Blanca two days because it was windy and there was nothing but cactus and rocks around and Duchess didn't like that. But we did get to sleep in a real bad inside of a travel trailer for those two nights.
After that in order to avoid wolf Creek pass which I've been over way too many times we went south to Antonita, Colorado and then down into, Chama, New Mexico and around and backup ending up in Pagosa Springs.
We had found a dispersed camping area on Campendium.com up along Jackson Mountain Road just east of Pagosa Springs. We found an absolutely perfect spot off of Jackson Mountain Road on forest service road something or another where we stayed for ten days.
Unfortunately cell and data service we're iffy so I didn't post anything during that time. We went into Pagosa Springs twice so I could take a shower at the community center for four bucks and pick up a few things at City Market.
A ranger came by the second day we were there and said that there were now fire restrictions and no fires were allowed anywhere in the San Juan National Forest. Other than that we saw four or five cars go down the small road that we were on and heard four or five more go down Jackson Mountain Road.
Duchess thoroughly enjoyed it there because she was off leash the entire time and wandered where she felt like  but never want very far from camp. Each day we took a walk about a quarter of a mile up the road where there was cell service and spotty data but I didn't want to try to upload a post from there.
We will probably, no most certainly go back there before the summer is over.
Since my birthday is June 1st I decided to spend five nights back down at the Gila Hot Springs. For $8 a night that's the same as one night at Orvis Hot Springs.
Having stayed in the same place for ten days I was getting antsy so we headed back down to El Morro where we stayed for eight days.
On the way South from Farmington to Grants we went through some incredible thunderstorms which I know everyone around here is happy for. Just before El Morro we crossed the Continental Divide and had to slow down because of snow. But down the road at El Morro it was beautiful.
We met a most interesting couple at El Morro.
Mark and Nancy are the quintessential old hippie couple. They camp in a beautiful old Volkswagen bus that's been converted into a trailer.
If you do Facebook, check out TheGenieBottle. If not, I will update with pictures when I get WiFi.
We left El Morro this morning Tuesday, May 29th heading for Apache Creek Campground near Reserve, New Mexico to spend two nights and then be on our way to the Hot Springs.
After a stop at Pietown for some birthday pie (pear, ginger, almond, cranberry) we started towards the campground.
About halfway there I saw fire on the side of a mountain but I didn't think it was close to where we were going.
Turns out that's exactly where it was and the campground is closed and being used as a staging area for the firefighters.
So I decided to keep driving all the way to Silver City and then after stopping for some supplies and gas ($3.19 per gallon for regular! YIKES!) heading up to a place called Terry Canyon dispersed camping area that I found on campendium.com.
As I write this we're in Terry Canyon dispersed camping area in the Gila National Forest about an hour away from the Gila Hot Springs.
It's pretty nice here so we will probably come back here after the Hot Springs and stay a couple of weeks.
We will stay here for two days this time and then Thursday head to the hot Springs.
Since I haven't had a shower in ten days I look forward to filling the solar shower with hot water from the spigot at the Hot Springs and taking a nice shower and washing my hair before I go soak for a loooooong time.
I hope to be able to upload this post before I get to the Hot Springs where I also have no cell or data service and will update it with photos later.

  1. I so enjoy reading these posts, but I have tears in my eyes the whole time. I am relieved to know you are both fine, but miss you more than words can say.
